As documented by investigative journalist, Christopher Bryson:
- The first water fluoridation experiments were orchestrated by Manhattan Project scientists, led by Dr. Harold Hodge, the chief toxicologist. The development of nuclear weapons had meant the release of huge amounts of fluorides into the atmosphere, which crippled livestock and sickened civilians. The scientists were tasked with collecting data on the effects of chronic fluoride exposure in humans, for use in defending the US military in future lawsuits.
- Dr. Harold Hodge also oversaw the notorious human radiation experiments, in which unsuspecting hospital patients were injected with plutonium, to see how much was required to cause injury. This was the kind of mindset behind water fluoridation.
- Dr. Harold Hodge promoted water fluoridation and trained a generation of pro-fluoridation dental school deans in the 1950s and 1960s, even though he knew in the 1940s that fluoride was neurotoxic and a chronic poison.
- The industrialists who defended fluoride through the decades also defended asbestos and leaded gasoline.
- When the US Public Health Service endorsed water fluoridation, the man in charge was a Mr. Oscar Ewing, a former Wall Street lawyer for the Aluminum Company of America (ALCOA), a leading producer of fluoride pollution. ALCOA was subsequently able to sell its toxic waste fluoride for use in water fluoridation.
