If it's been coming and going for about 4 years, then it isn't bone cancer, or cancer of any sort. If it were, you'd most likely be bedridden and in constant pain (unless you were on powerful pain meds).
As far as I know, also, my grandpa only felt the pain in his back (he had osteosarcoma) and it was a constant pain (he kept refusing to go to hospital, and only eventually went because he developed pneumonia), not one that subsided after a day or two, or, indeed, with normal pain killers.
What you describe sound like growing pains. I got them from the onset of puberty (about 11) until I was about 19 (a year ago). My legs and back were the worst, and I still get back pain. If it were bone cancer (particularly untreated bone cancer), you wouldn't have the strength to do anything and you would have VERY limited movement. And if it had gone untreated for so long...I imagine you'd have died already, or that you'd be very close to death.
It sounds like growing pains. Nothing serious. Pain from bone cancer would surely be constant.
