Will One Exposure To Asbestos Cause Lung Cancer?

Postby Evann » Wed Sep 06, 2017 5:39 pm

We were sanding our plaster walls to prep for painting with an electric sander. I did not even think until my mom mentioned there might be asbestos in the plaster walls. We vacuumed up the dust and opened all the windows and doors to air it out.
Can you get cancer from one exposure?

Possible, but unlikely. It's chronic exposure to the dust that causes cancer.

When I was in grade school, before the dangers of asbestos were well known, we were given bags of asbestos powder to mix with water and use for modelling clay. That's right; we stuck our hands in the bags, picked up handfuls of the asbestos, mixed it with water, and played with it.
I am 61 now; I have four younger brothers who did the same thing at school. None of us have lung cancer so far, and I had a chest X-ray last year so I was totally good as of a year ago.

If you're worried anyway, why not google "asbestos in plaster" and read some of what you find?

Why would there be asbestos in the wall? - Asbestos would only normally be used where the areas needed fire separation, for example in blocks of flats between separate dwellings, or if you have a boiler room. Normal walls in a house would not need asbestos, so little to worry about.

Not likely.
To complete your job don a gas respirator not just a dust mask.
They are sold at home improvement stores and tool rental supplies.
It has an adjustable strap, lets you breathe normally while working with chemicals, etc.
Safer than fumes gagging you.

First, vacuuming was the wrong thing to do as that just spread the material.
Damp wiping would have been better.
Second, in homes, asbestos in plaster is so rare many inspectors have never seen it. It was an expensive material and used mostly in high end houses. You are more likely to find it in the joint compound used in wallboard applications.

Now, can you get cancer, yes.
It is highly highly, highly, very highly unlikely.
You have already been exposed just touching the walls in the past and you also have natural exposure to asbestos too.

So bottom line, don't worry or have the wall material tested at a local lab.
If no asbestos, you can stop worrying altogether.

its much more likely that there is lead in the paint you sanded than asbestos in the plaster

next time, wear a handkerchief to cover nose and mouth or get a mask from hardware store. smokers are at a much greater risk. it's the exposure over lifetime that affects you. plastic tarp around work area.
