Will My Ob Do A Vaginal Exam Every Time?

Postby Jean » Sat Sep 30, 2017 2:14 am

I'm 16 weeks pregnant and already had the main prenatal visit and vaginal exam. I wanted to know based on the fact that my grandma has type 1 (which doesn't matter for a vaginal exam) and my mom has type 2. But the thing that makes me wonder is my aunt had ovarian cancer...so will he examine me every time i go in?

I would refuse any further vaginal exams because they are worthless and invite infection which can actually cause preterm labor.
The only reason you would have another one is if there were a suspected infection or preterm labor.
You are not diabetic and diabetes wouldn't make any difference anyway. Neither would ovarian cancer.

BTW, checking for dilation late in pregnancy is also worthless and invites infection. Many of the newer doctors have been trained to no longer do this.

No, they usually just do 1 vaginal exam early on in the pregnancy.
They won't check up there again until closer to your due date (around 36 weeks) to check for dilation.

No - they usually start this very unnecessary exam around 36/37 weeks

I personally always refused as they're pointless unless you're in active labor

They're not going to be worried about ovarian cancer for you at this time. But in future, you should be screened and you should be sure to tell your doc your aunt had it. There are blood tests to do (CA-125) and ultraound exams to check for it. You can also do a genetic test to see if you have a tendency towards it.
