What is this bump on my neck? Could it be cancer?

Laura, what you have described is a palpable occipital lymph node. These are normal and can become swollen for a whole variety of reasons. I advise you to educate yourself about your lymph nodes and if you feel this node is growing or more nodes pop up then see your physician for treatment. Typical causes of nodes in that area are : Flu, infection in mouth, trauma, lymphoma(cancer),or other type of inflammation in upper body.

I had something like that and it was just a fatty deposit under the skin (I can't exactly remember what she called it). The dr did say she would remove it if I wanted to because they tend to grow, and the earlier you get it out the smaller the scar. I didn't though and mine's shrunk in the last year or two, and is hardly noticeable now.
