It varies... remember, they (for the most part) did not have the benefits of modern medicine. Mozart died of rheumatic fever (could have been cured by antibiotics), Beethoven may have died of lead poisoning or sarcoidosis (again lack of modern medicine), Schubert and Schumann possibly syphilis (same again) and some simply died as the life expectancy at that time was basically up for them. Chopin died of Tuberculosis, likely would have survived with antibiotics, Brahms died of Pancreatic or Hepatic Cancer, Wagner died from complication due to Angina, Liszt died of pneumonia and Bach from stroke caused by surgical complications and pneumonia.

Does that answer your question?

Nearly EVERYBODY died young in those days. You were doing quite well to pass 40 in the 18th century, remarkably well to reach your 50s and were quite exceptional if you made it to your 60s. This graph:

... starts in 1850 (well after composers like Bach, Beethoven, Mozart and Schubert had died) and already you will see that the average life expectancy was below 40. This was because of poor diet and the lack of advanced medical treatments to fight diseases that were then very common and responsible for many deaths.

So, composers were not unusual with their early deaths, merely a symptom of what was normal at the time.

consider a kid in elementary school, traveling by carriage on bumpy roads for months at a time. For years.
Body is a mess - easy to get sick.
