What Can Scar Your Lungs Besides Asbestos?

Postby Maddock » Sat Sep 16, 2017 8:11 am

I'm always worried inhaling stuff that scars your lungs because I always feel short of breath as it is (maybe I've already scarred them).
Sometimes I walk past construction sites and there's cement dust everywhere.
Can cement dust scar your lungs? How about smoking? Fumes from cleaning liquids?

Lung scarring can occur because of poorly controlled asthma, TB, smoking, chronic cough, chemical irritants, and many more. Cement dust is more in the area of pulmonary fibrosis. There are a variety of lung diseases that can result from breathing in industrial materials. The best way to see if you have something wrong with your lungs is to see your doctor and have spirometry or more comprehensive pulmonary function testing. This will detect abnormal flows and volumes that are present with lung disease.

If you're feeling short of breath, I recommend that you see your doctor. There are numerous causes for it and many are easily treated with inhaled medication or a course of antibiotics.

Smoking certainly cause a lot of damage including scarring.

Lung infects like pneumonia, tuberculosis, etc.

Occupational lung disease like silicosis (you could get that from repeat exposure to construction dust, but not from just walking by every now and then), black lung, farmers lung among others.

Scarring from lung injuries like stab and gunshot wounds, blunt trauma like pulmonary contusions, inhalation injury from smoke (fire) and toxic fumes (eg. chlorine gas).

my husband was a sandblaster for a boat trailer factory for 15 years. he developed "black lung" disease, COPD, and a severe case of asthma. his lungs have coal deposits in them plus much scar tissue. he used aluminum oxide at his job. he has been in a workmans comp case for 3 years and the company still refuses to take responsibility.
