Picking A Good Bullmastiff Breeder?? Any Pointers?

My family and I are looking to buy a bully in about a year.I am an experienced dog owner but not with this breed, I have also always gone to the pound or bought a puppy from the newspaper. Since these dogs are so large understandably I am going to be more picky. Problem is I have no breeder knowledge.I live in a small town on the outskirts of Greenville , SC and it seems from my searches that without a travel, my options are limited. Can anyone please give me some pointers , names of trustworthy breeders etc.? Please note I am not interested in showing my dog, or studding my dog, I just want a family pet so the best temperament is most important to us.

Also is there a reason some bullies have more of a bulldog face and some not so squished? The ones I am referring to have all been AKC registered, is this just a difference in the individual dogs, or is this a possible sign of different bloodlines? Just curious, looks wise , I personally prefer the larger, more brachycephalic look.

The wrinkliness of any bully-type breed is pretty random, but it would mostly depend on the wrinkliness of the parents (not always though, as our boxer had very wrinkly-faced parents and yet he's nearly wrinkle-free).

As for breeders, some ship their dogs (we had a boxer shipped from a breeder in Calgary once), so that might be something you could look into, although meeting the pups parents is always preferable.

Here's a link to the American Bullmastiff Association : - they may be able to help you find a good breeder.

This breeder is located in South Carolina, you might want to check her dogs out:

And this breeder ships for free, although the sales pitch on their site makes me a little wary of their credibility as 'true breeders' (Eg: in it for the betterment of the breed) :

Good luck, I hope that answers your question! :) xx

Oh! And just a PS, bull mastiffs have REALLY greasy fur (to keep of the rain back in England), so... prepare yourself for that. ;) The drooling too!

1. Go with a breeder who shows in conformation.
The parents and pups have the same care as their next Westminster hopeful and they are more likely to abide by the breed club's code of ethics.

2. Make sure that both parents have hips, heart, elbows, and thyroid OFA certified with good-excellent results.
In a breed as popular as the Bullmastiff there is no need to breed dogs with sub-par health.
The breeder should also be able to talk about incidences of cancer, bloat, and seizures in the line.

3. Ask for some of the names in the pedigree of the puppies.
Use google.
Find out all you can about cause of death in the pup's ancestors.

Go to and look under Bullmastiffs You find a lot of information about them there, including their Standard.
Reliable breeders are also listed at

Breeders that show their dogs not only breed to the standard, but also breed for temperment.

They also do not always have "show" quality, there are often what they consider pet quality.

But that doesn't take away from their genetics, their health, their temperment, just because you are getting a "pet" from them.

Also they have Breed Clubs listed and you can contact one closer to your area.
