Small cell stage 4 non curable lung cancer diagnosis..?

Postby ethelred » Wed May 22, 2013 2:58 pm

Lungs have been drained of fluid (lots) three times in the past week and a half. Looking for a
time frame. Has spread to some bones and a spot on the liver. How long before death?

The fluid build up is a sign that the end is near, but the timeframe is not predictable. People usually hang on until something serious goes wrong such as an organ failure, or lung infection, or sometimes the lungs can no longer provide enough oxygen. If the fluid accumulation can be kept under control and if the patient can breathe well enough to get some walking in each day, it could be months to more than a year. If these things are not possible, its a much shorter timeframe.

Your doctor should have talked to you about the time frame, ask them next time you see them :)

It's best to ask the oncologist or doctor treating the person due to obvious reasons. Everyone is different, but my brother had this and died 2 months after being diagnosed.
