Primary Liver Cancer (hcc) - Terminally Ill

Postby Sissy » Fri Apr 15, 2016 4:23 am

My Father aged 78 yrs was diagnosed for Hepatacellular Carcinoma(HCC) Primary liver cancer in Jan 2008. we are taking care of him at home without any hospice help so far. In the last one month he has stopped eating solid food and sleeps 95% of the time. we are providing him Fresh lime juices, milk, Gatarode drink etc.. to give him strength. He has stopped recognising my family members.

we are providing him with diapers for toilet issues and his urine color is pale red. He has no pain in his abdomen so far. My : Is there any more sufferings he has to undergo like pain or vomitting? or Is there any other way we can help him ? Please advise. Thanks in advance & regards, Srinivas

Primary Liver Cancer (hcc) - Terminally Ill

I am so sorry about your father. It sounds like you all are doing a great job caring for him. Sleeping most of the time is normal and eventually his sleeping turns to coma. I would allow him to choose the food and fluids that he wants. Most patients have anorexia and food does not taste very good. The food or fluids will not really make him stronger and may make  him nauseous, so let  him pick and choose what food he wants to eat.

Some patients have some dull pain in the area of the liver and some do not. My experience has been that their pain is less with time. The body tends to build up toxins which affects their brain. That may already be happening as he no longer recognizes people. This affect on the brain seems to make them feel pain less. Important to note that any facial grimacing, moaning or restlessness may need to be identified as pain and treated as he cannot tell you if he has pain. Again, it sounds like you are doing a great job. He probably won't have vomiting especially if he chooses to stop eating which is part of the expected course of the disease. The hospice nurses will assess him closely for any discomfort during thier visits. Do not hesitate to call them, night or day if you are concerned in any way.

Best of luck to you all.
