My Grandpa Has Lung Cancer And Has Coughing Spells?

Postby Alano » Sun Oct 01, 2017 12:14 pm

Hey, my grandpa was diagnosed with lung cancer early this year and did not ever cough much. However, a few months ago, they put a scope down his throat and since then has horrible coughing spells everyday (about 3-4) to where he stops breathing and spits up alot. He can no longer sleep in a bed but instead a recliner and only gets a few minutes of sleep before he begins coughing. Although he is a retired police officer, he still works in the jail and I'm scared he might have a spell at work or in the car. The doctors say they don't know why he's coughing like this...It seems normal with it being lung cancer and all but I was just wondering if anyone else has dealt with this? He's on breathing treatments and nothing seems to work..

If you know anything about this or some ways to help, please let me know. I hate seeing him miserable like this everyday.

Thanks so much.

My Grandpa Has Lung Cancer And Has Coughing Spells?

Postby farall » Sun Oct 01, 2017 12:38 pm

does your grandpa have a pulmonologist, It sounds like he should see one if he dont have one. has your grandpa been on Prednisone it is a drug that is used to help with cancer and other problems. also is your grandpa on any inhalers like sprivia or advair disk, these also help with coughing and breathing for the lungs. i work for a pulmonologist and we have a lot of lung cancer paients and it sounds like your grandpa needs to see one and if he has a pulmonologist then i do not understand why his doctor has not helped him in this matter. He may need a new pulmonologist not saying that the one that he has is a bad one but, your grandpa should get better help with his coughing. i hoped this helped you and good luck with your grandpa. God bless you.

My Grandpa Has Lung Cancer And Has Coughing Spells?

Your grandpa may need to go back to the doctor and get another test to determine if there is excess fluid built up in his lungs. This would explain the cough and the need to sleep in a recliner. People with these symptoms often also have tiredness and exertion and shortness of breath with normal walking and minor exercise(dyspnea). He may need to see a cardiologist(heart doctor) to look into the pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs) as it may be caused by a heart problem. This condition can be very treatable with a really inexpensive medication. They can also prescribe night time supplemental oxygen and another medication to help calm his lungs so that he can get some sleep.
His doctor really should be taking care of all of these things already, but if you are able to talk with the doctor you might want to just ask about what I have mentioned and see if applies to him. Best Wishes.
