My 6 Month Old Kitten Just Got Spayed And The Dr. Said Her Liver Level Was Elevated Any Ideas Why?

I didn't have the money to check her liver levels through a blood test at the time, they were asking like $200 which I didn't have...she is a healthy happy playful kitty...she eats well and drinks well...any idea of what could be wrong? has anyone had a similar situation with their pet?

Thanks very much. I do have pet insurance for her. The plan just does not cover this type of blood work, but ti does cover her spaying and office visits, shots, deworming, things like that. Thanks again   loveybear1988 46 months ago

aww poor thing, sorry to hear that. I do have a pet insurance policy called the optimum wellness plan through Banfield Pet Hospital through PetsMart stores, but unfortunately they have their fine print that doesn't cover EVERYTHING, you know how that works...but thanks for your reply   loveybear1988 46 months ago

Yeah, she could have gotten an infection from the surgery. You may need to watch her to see if it goes away of if she needs additional treatment.   DanZee 46 months ago

There can be many reasons for this you really need to talk to your vet. Owning a pet is a responsibility. You may want to look into getting pet insurance. The payments can be very affordable and will give you peace of mind. I do know that you will need to give your kitty a high quality diet now. Cats with liver problems should not be given shellfish, organ meats, or foods containing fish meal. These contain purines which metabolize to form uric acid, which is something that a damaged live cannot process.I recommend Innova EVO Turkey and Chicken or if you do a google search for grain free foods you will be doing your kitty good.   *Carla* 46 months ago

I am not a vet, but I think you should have waited to have the kitten spayed until a determination of what is causing the higher liver enzyme. But, since the kitten has been spayed, I would try and find the money to have the liver test done.It is not a very difficult test. I would call around to a few vets to see what they charge. It is called a bile acid test. You fast the cat for 12 hours, then they take a blood sample, then you feed the cat and then they take another blood sample two hours later. If the enzyme level is increased, it means the liver is not functioning correctly and that further diagnostics should be considered. Since the cat is so young, I would sign up for pet insurance. The ASPCA offers a great policy with different price options. We had a situation years ago with one of our cats, and had to put her on a special diet. She lived to age 13. She came down with diabetes later in life.   WEALTHADVISOR 46 months ago

oh actually the doctor called me BEFORE he did the surgery and told me her liver level was elevated, he said 99% of the time the animals will be fine but since the anesthesia goes right to the liver he called me and asked me first if it was okay to do the surgery so I don't think it was actually from the surgery since it was elvated BEFORE the spay was done.   loveybear1988 46 months ago
