Is The Pain Coming From My Appendix Or My Ovary?

Postby Thor » Fri Oct 06, 2017 2:37 pm

I am a 23 year old female in good health (fairly balanced diet, relatively active). I'm having a dull, aching pain on the right side of my lower abdomen. I've had it before (5 months ago) and a CT scan + pelvic exam + routine blood work didn't reveal anything helpful. It was determined not to be my appendix. I don't find it plausible to think that I have an ovarian cyst either, as I'm on birth control pills.

If I press on the area, I can feel where the pain is emanating from. It's by no means debilitating, but it worries me nonetheless. I am concerned about ovarian cancer, due to colon cancer running in my family.

Anxiety is a problem with me and it often manifests in hypochondria. I've spent a lot of money throughout my life, just so that doctors can tell me that nothing is wrong with me. I'm trying to avoid going to the doctor again with this issue until I can determine whether it's worth looking into further.

Does anyone have any advice or insight into this matter? How could I determine whether the pain was coming from my ovary or my appendix?

(Please don't answer "go to the doctor"; I understand that not everybody posting here is a medical professional and am not asking for a diagnosis. Just advice / guidance.)

Alright I'm not going to lie I was going to say "go to the doctor" but I can understand why you don't want to hear that. After several unsuccessful visits I can tell it's obviously not that helpful. I would like to help you with this but there is one thing with the human body that makes it very difficult to determine where the pain is coming from. The way that we are set up makes it difficult to tell were pain is coming from sometimes and signals can be misinterpreted. This is because our nerves cross each other so sometimes the messages can get lost. The best example I can think of is when you have a stomach ache you usually feel it closer to your belly button even though your stomach is much higher and to the left. Or how when people have heart attacks their left arm or lower back can hurt. This is going to make it harder to pinpoint the pain an I'm not sure I have any idea how you could determine the exact location.
The appendix are not too close together and therefore I feel that you SHOULD be able to tell the difference but I can't say that for sure. I believe your ovary would be a little higher than the appendix. Also I don't think the appendix would have this type of pain. Usually it's horrendous pain that results in removing in it not just tender to the touch. SO my best guess would be ovary. Good Luck!

You could have a cyst on your ovary or you could be suffering from endometriosis, possibly. If you have any sudden pain that won't go away, you need to go to the ER (insurance or not) as the if it is a cyst, it could possibly rupture. Good Luck!
