Is loperamide (Imodium) safe to a person who underwent colostomy?

Postby leyman » Tue Nov 22, 2011 2:33 am

my father's colon already underwent colostomy. Since my father frequently discharges, his discharge is always in liquid form. He came from an early colon cancer and fortunately survived. I'm asking if taking loperamide (Imodium) safe so that his discharge may be solid.

That would be a question for his surgeon and/or ostomy nurse. Everyone is different as to what they can handle. Normally, it shouldn't be a problem, but his surgeon/ostomy nurse may have a reason why he can't take it. Check with them.

You need to ask your doctor about that. I wouldn't recommend asking a nurse, because to be perfectly honest, nurses are notorious for giving bad advice about medications. Your father's doctor would know his history of colostomy and if the disease state would interfere with a drug like Imodium.
