Doing anything like that 3-4 times a week is just as good as going to the gym! If you want to be active, then go for it! Prevent Sedentary Death Syndrome - caused by a life of parking on your butt in front of the computer or television.

Sedentary death syndrome or SeDS, is a term coined by researchers who are encouraging NIH scientists to look at a syndrome that results from inactivity aka hypokinetic disorders.

Being sedentary is defined as engaging in less than 30 minutes of moderate physical activity, equivalent to brisk walking, each day. Inactivity causes a host of problems as noted in the folllowing list of SeDS facts:

-Children are now getting adult-onset (type 2) diabetes

-children watching 1 hour of tv a day have less obesity than those watching 4 hours a day

-3 out of 4 adults are sedentary and candidates for SeDS

-Adult-onset diabetes increased 5-fold from 1958-1996

-3 days of complete bed rest produces a pre-diabetic blood sugar

-the first observable defect in type 2 diabetes usually occurs in inactive skeletal muscle

-the CDC has found a 61% increase in Americans who are obese from 1991 to 2000

-moderate physical activity reduces colon cancer

-bad blood lipids are removed from the blood after moderate physical activity

-moderate physical activity lessens the incidence of the decline of cognitive function with aging. (1)

-gallstone disease

-high blood triglyceride

-high blood cholesterol

-peripheral vascular disease (PVD)

-physical frailty

-premature mortality

-prostate cancer

-sleep apnea

-stiff joints

-stroke

-type 2 diabetes

Sedentary living increases the progression of these conditions

-chemotherapy

-chronic back pain

-debilitating illness

-disease cachexia (wasting away)

-falls resulting in broken hips

-physical frailty

-spinal cord injury

-stroke

-vertebral/femoral fractures (2)

depends on what you want....for cardio if its a good fast paced video it should be good...if you want strength then nothing can beat weights....

That depends on what videos you use and what you do at the gym. I use classic FIRM videos which combine weight training and cardio. They have really helped me when I haven't had the cash for a gym membership. I don't like their newer videos, but their ones from the '90s are great! They will bust your butt.

As far as the gym goes, nothing, no videos or anything else, can be more effective than lifting heavy 3X per week.

I find taking a sledgehammer to an exercise video 2 or 3 times a week is enough for me.

i workout at home for almost 2 years and love it. i buy any workout DVD and it is the same as when i go to gym. even better because the instructre is not perfect as on the DVD. you get used to workout and each time you use it you have more experience and do it better , work through it harder and burn more calorie.
