If your pancreas has shut down, how long do you have to live?

Postby tyrone » Sat Sep 10, 2011 3:52 am

My grandmother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer a few months ago. She had a stint put in and the doctor gave here 3 months to live. My grandmother is 80 years old so chemo was not an option. She told me yesterday that the 3 months have passed and that she thinks that her pancreas has shut down because she can't keep anything in her system. I am wondering if her pancreas has indeed shut down, then I am wondering how much longer do I have with her? She is my life. She practically raised me. I really don't want her to go, but I also don't want her to be in pain anymore. If anyone can give me any kind of an answer it would be really appreciated. Thank you.

I'm so sorry for you and your grandmother, I went through the same with my mother. The Drs. gave her 3 or 4 months, she had a stint, then had it replaced about 4 or 5 times, she lived about 17 or 18 months after the original diagnoses. Her pancreas finally shut down completely about 3 weeks before she passed, but she was unaware because she was in a semi comatosed state. The not being able to keep food in her may, she should try a very low sugar low carb low fat diet, I know it's very bland but it might help, it did for my mom.

According to

http://uk.ask.com/web?q=Live+without+a+Functioning+Pancreas&qsrc=14097&o=41647924&l=dir

you can live without a functioning pancreas.

I am sorry about your grandmother and hope it all ends well
