I Was Just Diagnosed With Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma It Looks Like It Has Spread To Most Of The Lymph Nodes?

Postby Tommy » Thu Oct 05, 2017 11:13 pm

So I go to the surgeon today and he does not deal with lymph nodes. I found another dr. and have an appointment tomorrow.
So once they get me finally scheduled into surgery if it is in the lymph nodes what then? Everyone keeps talking about this being so easy but that is if it isn't in the lymph nodes.
Sounds horrible the dr. wants a right neck disection and the thyroidectomy.

Then they will give you chemo and radiation to kill the cancer in the lymph nodes. If there are no lung mets then it is a pretty straight forward treatment and has a very high cure rate. Best Wishes.

I don?t know who everyone is, but there is nothing easy about cancer.

About half of the patients diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancers have lymph node involvement.

I?m not sure what you mean by the doctor did deal with lymph nodes. All surgeons deal with lymph nodes.

I?m not really sure what your question is, but lymph node involvement does not change survivability.

Without knowing your age, the stage or the size of the tumor I cannot tell you much, but the raw 10 year survival rate for patients under 40 years old is 95% and overall 3-12% of patients die from this cancer.

Best option in your case is Total thyroidectomy with radical neck dissection.

Bx,report of thyroid and removed nodes will decide future management.

Papillary carcinoma has good prognosis.

You will need thyroid supplementation life long.

Head and Neck Oncosurgeon is the right person to cosult and get operated.

Listen to Denise, lymph node metastases are not that unusual and they do not lower prognosis.
There's no harm in getting second or third opinions on surgeons, you should have an expert that specializes in thyroidectomies and neck dissections (Endocrine surgeon or ENT surgeon).

After you have your thyroid and the malignant lymph nodes removed, your doctor will likely want you to get I-131/ radioactive iodine.
This is the most common follow-up treatment for papillary, so there's no external beam radiation or chemotherapy that is used in other types of cancer.
Good luck!

If you don't know about http://thyca.org I suggest you look it over.
