I Tan Too Easily, What Can I Do?

Postby Sterne » Fri Apr 21, 2017 7:17 am

It's just getting in to summer now (Southern Hemisphere) and I'm already having the problem with tanning. I tan REALLY easily, I was out in the sun for an hour today and I have brown skin on my arms, neck and face. I wore sunscreen, a cap, t-shirt...everything. All it did was give me a t-shirt tan. I don't want to tan because of a few reasons.

1) It's REALLY bad for your skin.

2) Freaking skin cancer people.

3) I just don't like it.

4) I'm blonde so it makes me look like a "fake bimbo" (quote from my friends)

What can I do to help stop tanning? I can't not go out in the sun, I have things I need to do around town.

Being tan doesn't give you cancer, excessive tanning can promote cancer. There's a difference. If you tan easily, it's no different than a fair skinned person being out in the sun for the same length of time. If anything, you're better off than a fair skinned person who gets a sunburn after being outside in 30 degree temperatures for a half hour. In fact, a little sun is good for you. Today's generation is having health problems due to sun paranoia. You need some sunlight for the Vitamin D and it's just not the same as getting it from milk or vitamin supplements. In other words, don't fear the colour. Just remember not everyone tans equally, otherwise every dark skinned person is doomed to skin cancer. The warnings are for those who can't tan yet go to tanning booths constantly and come out looking like a cooked lobster. Not for people who have more melanin.

Your fourth point is one that can be corrected by saying "no, fake bimbos are orange and look like they have footballs stuffed in their shirt". The tan/blonde look can look good if it's done right/natural.

- Cover your head with a over hanging hat

- Suntan lotion which protects you from UVA & UVB rays.

- try and cover your shoulders and big areas from the sun.

- stay in shaded areas

- Aloe vera on exposed skin is very good for protection also.

Wear clothes that cover your skin (but obviously light breezy summer clothes, eg alternate between maxi dresses and long sleeved flowy tops) other than that all you can do is lots of sunblock. Make sure it is a high quality one like 30+ if that still doesn't work and you hate the fake bimbo thing that blonde hair + tan resembles, why not die your hair brown? A change is good anyway! You're lucky, I wish I tanned like you!
