I have a hard painful lump on my descending colon that was discovered yesterday... chances of cancer?

Postby bedford51 » Sat Dec 29, 2012 9:07 pm

I have a hard painful lump on my descending colon that was discovered yesterday by my GI doctor. I have to have a colonoscopy in two weeks, but the doctor seemed quite concerned. I have been dealing with chronic constipation (up to two weeks at a time), red blood in my stool, and mucus in my stool. Lots of nausea and a feeling of "soreness" in my abdomen. I have been incredibly fatigued, as well. This lump is about a nickel in diameter, it hurts when touched. The doctor said it's much to high to be an internal hemorrhoid. My question is, when should I begin to worry about cancer? I am only 26 years old.

If it's painful to the touch, it's most likely not cancer. I wouldn't tell you not to worry about it because of your age though, a friend of mine is only 25 and has colon cancer so the people answering should not be so blasé about the possibility. Obviously, you shouldn't panic but don't dismiss the idea either. If the doctor was ultra concerned, he would have scheduled the colonoscopy much sooner, so take a breather there!

If it is a hemorrhoid, the doctor might immediately try to convince you of surgery. Do not resort to immediate surgery! Surgically removed hemmies almost always return. Instead, try to treat it with a half mixture of tea tree oil and olive oil first, while washing with tea tree oil soap during showers. :) Most likely, this will make it go away. Good luck!

You shouldn't worry about cancer unless you have the colonoscopy and a biopsy shows the presence of cancer. Your age would make that less likely. Don't worry about something that hasn't happened yet, in other words. (I have have stage III thyroid cancer).

So how was this lump found and how does he know it is hard if you did not have a colonoscopy?
BTW that checks the inside of the colon not the outside.

Cancer is very rare that young, and it's usually NOT painful. There is always a chance, but I say it's less likely that its cancer. Maybe a polyp or hernia or something

That is a question you should have asked your doctor yesterday. He is the expert.
