How true that cervical vaccine does not prevent nor cure cervical cancer?

Postby yuuto » Thu Mar 31, 2011 1:47 am

It neither cures nor prevents it. What it does is vaccinate you against some of the HPV viruses and a couple of them are supposed to be risk factors for cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is fairly rare and most certainly can be and is caused by other factors as well.

There isn’t a cervical cancer vaccine. It is an HPV vaccine and it protects you against 4 strains of HPV provided you were not exposed to them before you received all 3 injections. It decreases your risk for cervical cancer by eliminated the risk of HPV it does not prevent cancer.

It aims to prevent cervical ca.

Firstly, completely ignore the cancer reg, who has no idea what she is talking about. The aim of the HPV vaccine is to protect against 2 strains of HPV (types 16 and 18), that are strongly associated with causing the majority of cervical ca cases (70%). To claim that it does not prevent cervical ca (when that is its main aim) is just idiotic. I'll get to this in a minute.

Gardasil (the vaccine that is given in the US) is quadrivalent and protects against two additional strains of HPV, (types 6, 11) that are associated with around 90% of genital warts cases. No vaccine is 100% effective, and you will still need to have regular pap smears. You must understand that this vaccine is no substitute.

I think what Denise and her pal are referring to is the fact that by the time we all reach mid-late adulthood, approx 80% of us will carry one of more strains of the HPV virus, and the fact majority of us don't get cervical ca, means that HPV does not cause cervical ca. This is a fallacious argument, I'll give an example:

50 people (5 times over the limit) drink drive, only 20 of them have accidents,
Therefore alcohol was not a factor in the other accidents.

This does not follow, it does not mean that alcohol wasn't the cause of those accidents.

There are other co-factors and numerous reasons why some people are more susceptible to ca, some of the factors we don't know. Smoking may increase the risk, as well as being continually re-infected with any of the high risk strains linked to cervical ca. However, scientists have long known the direct affect HPV can have on cells.

The vaccine is more effective when given before you come into contact with any of the HPV strains it protects against.

It will not cure it, but it is 80% effective in preventing it (estimation. i've hat the vaccine, but im not quite sure what the exact percentage is).
