How Much Exposure To Asbestos Is Required To Diagnose Cancer Later Down The Track?

Postby Shaine » Sun Oct 01, 2017 3:06 am

i was helping my boss do a job where it involved removing asbestos sheets on top of a shed. We were both wearing respirators but at times i took it off because it was uncomfortable, however, i was well away from the sheets. Also i was not wearing any safety glasses or sun glasses at the time and am afraid that i got some in my eye... can this be harmful and serious? I am just a bit scared because my mum watched her dad die from asbestos. Please help! also should i reuse that respirator? its a disposable respirator.

asbestos exposure of any kind will increase your risk of mesothelioma but the risk is relatively small with slight exposure.
Pretty much everyone has some amount of asbestos fibers in their lungs and pretty much nobody gets sick.
Most of the people that do get sick are the ones that worked with it thick in the air before anyone knew it was harmful.
If the sheets you were working with were very friable and you breathed in a lot of dust you probably increased your risk of getting sick but proving that later on would be difficult.
Also depending on who you work for its very possible there wouldn't be an entity to sue.

That being said you should either throw out the entire respirator or throw out the filters and wash all the plastic bits depending on the style.
No sense in breathing in more than you already have.
I'd also refuse to do future asbestos abatement work without proper equipment and training, its not worth it.
