Does the Air Force discharge, if you develop thyroid cancer and have the thyroid removed during active duty?

My Daughter developed thyroid cancer, while in active duty. Doctors removed her thyroid and limp nodes. She will have to take thyroid meds for the rest of her life. Has anyone else gone through this?

In your daughter's case, she will have to go before the Physical Evaluation Board. The Air Force needs to make a determination as to whether your daughter can continue in her Air Force career with her existing medical condition. If she is allowed to stay in the Air Force, she may have certain duty restrictions depending on the circumstances. If the Air Force determines she cannot perform her duties because of her medical condition, she will be medically separated. She will receive an honorable discharge, which means she retains all her VA benefits (including the GI Bill) and she will receive some type of disability payment from the DOD for the rest of her life. Depending on the circumstances, she may be entitled to care at a VA hospital for this condition for the rest of her life as well.

It's rather typical for the military to "medically discharge" active duty members all the time, especially when said condition is not as a result of their military service.
