Do You Need A Colonoscopy Screening If You’ve Had A Colectomy?

Postby timothy » Tue Oct 10, 2017 3:54 am

I know it seems like a silly question, but my doc is insisting that I get a colonoscopy screen because I?m turning 50 this year.
But I had a complete colectomy with a J-pouch in 2001.
I?ve got no colon to screen.
Doc says she wants to run a screen anyway...
Really?

Do you really need to run a scope into a person?s small intestine as part of a colon-cancer screen?

I think it's prudent that you're questioning this.
When I googled "colectomy +colonoscopy", I got 5 hits. That low a number is almost unheard of for any two terms.
Was your colectomy done due to cancer? Maybe then I could see some reason.
Otherwise, I would ask for a consult with a gastroenterologist to get their take on it.
Colonoscopies aren't a big deal, but, as with any procedure, there are risks.
