I've always been told that cancer isn't a direct result of any carcinogenic material, but is your body's response to it. Apparently they're finding now that cancer might be the result of your body trying to survive in a "low oxygen state" (similar to muscles producing lactic acid in a low oxygen environment through fermentation. Oxygen is needed for "normal functioning"). The self destructive nature of it is apparently an "evolutionary bug".
