Can Non Smokers Get Lung Cancer?

Postby nolyn » Sun Oct 08, 2017 3:18 pm

Chloe is on the right track, and I'll expand a bit.

There are certain types of lung cancer that are rarely seen in non-smokers, bur "rarely" and "never" aren't quite the same. Second-hand smoke may well account for some of those "rarelies."

There are other types of lung cancer for which smoking is a risk, but for which non-smokers also get the tumors at a lower incidence than that in smokers.

Lots and lots of cancers can spread to the lungs, so you can get a cancer IN the lung that is not a cancer OF the lung. Smoking is usually not a big factor in these cases.

So the health advice is "Don't smoke." But it doesn't come with an iron-clad guarantee that your lungs will remain cancer-free.

Non smokers can develop lung cancer through a variety of ways: 1) Exposure to second hand smoke (smoke that dos not pass through the filter) have an increased chance of developing cancer 2) Pollution like those coming from vehicles 3) Chemical exposure (ex. asbestos has been linked to the development of a lung malignancy called mesothelioma) 4) Radiation exposure

Absolutely! They can receive the second hand smoke if they're around a smoker. It's more harmful to the second hand smoker because there isn't a filter for all that smoke. But a smoker has a filter in their cigarette. And you don't need to smoke or be any smoke. You can get lung cancer from other things called carcinogens like Radon Gas, Virus' etc. However your risk of lung cancer is highly elevated when you smoke.

I don't know but what i do know is that 2nd hand smoking will put you at a greater risk than being the actual smoker. I hope that kinda helps.
