Can A Wife Get Military Benefits, If Her Husband Is A Retired Vet?

Postby Rami » Sat Oct 07, 2017 8:57 pm

Having served five years in Vietnam, Mr. X received an honorable discharge. After having 5 heart attacks, diagnosed with prostate cancer and diabetes type 2, he had to retired from his job with full disability. Three years after he retired, he married. He is 65 and his wife is 60. She is not working and is need for medical care. Can she get medical benefits through the VA since he is a former vet?

He isn't retired. You have to serve 20+ years to retire from the military.

They should contact the VA and figure out the benefits the husband receives. I don't think she can get any, but the VA might extend the umbrella over her as well. It depends.

A RETIRED vet has done AT LEAST 20 years on active duty.
He doesn't qualify for medical benefits...BUT....if he was in-country Viet Nam, he should contact the DAV and the VA to see if his health problems are caused by agent orange.

(USN retired 1965-85,in-country Viet Nam vet 1966 & 1967)

First off he isn't a Retired Vet.
He is retired AND a vet.
Big huge difference.

Being a Retired Vet indicates he served 20+ years in the military and is receiving a military pension and benefits.

In this case he needs to be evaluated by the VA and his level of VA disability as well as a lot of other factors will determine what a spouse may be entitled to.

The VA has a 1-800 number to call that can handle the specific issues and give you answers.
There are WAY to many variables in this case.
