Between 2001 and 2011 the rate of skin cancer increased significantly, by 1.6% per year among men. More people are being diagnosed with skin cancer and it is becoming more expensive to treat — a recipe for disaster.

Other forms of cancer have become more expensive to treat, but not to the same degree. On average they increased by 25 percent.

The deadliest form of skin cancer, melanoma, saw the large increase in treatment costs. It went up by 106 percent. Skin cancer now costs more to treat per person and in the community as a whole.

A large percentage of the costs of treating skin cancer are held by the public, with medicare covering 41 percent of the costs. This is due to the large number of seniors who have been diagnosed with skin cancer.

Skin cancer is usually caused by damaging ultraviolet light from the sun or from tanning beds. Researchers at Public Health England found that there was an increase of nearly a third in skin cancer admissions. The data did not include patients who were not admitted to hospitals.

New research has indicated there are some worrying trends for the numbers of cases of skin cancer every year. The research show there are over 200’000 basal cell skin cancers treated with surgery every year. That could even be lower than the real figure with some doctors suggesting the official figures do not account for some skin cancer patients.

The UK based study showed that the number of basal cell carcinomas in the UK is as much as twice the figure indicated by government statistics. General practitioners at the Norfolk and Norwich hospitals carried out the study which found the alarming results. Cancer registries, which the government uses to assess the number of yearly cases of cancer, are inaccurate when it comes to basal cell carcinoma (BCC), according to the study. BCC is one of the most common forms of cancer, so the real number is many thousands off previous estimates.

The fact that the official statistics are far from the reality of the disease means that politicians, the public and the media don’t pay enough attention to it. The lower public awareness leads to increased incidents of the disease and the lack of political awareness means insufficient funding to match the true extent of BCC.

The best bet is to limit sun exposure to periods of 30 minutes and not during high UV times of the day.
