Sunscreen, apply it often.
Don;t scrimp and get the crappy stuff.
Wear boardshorts and a rashguard.
You can wear a wetsuit on the West coast year round and spring and fall on the East.
Some people wear surf hats.
They are a big floppy hat that ties under your chin and is made of quick dry material.

Rashguards are very important! They prevent stomach rashes as well as keeping your skin safe from the sun. The right swimwear will also help, and I'd wear boardshorts to protect your legs (maybe a more traditional med-long boardshort.)

Good, me neither. Sunscreen is the obvious solution but if you're looking to keep covered, try a long sleeved rash guard and some board shorts. You'll be covered most of the way.
