Benefits And Risks Of Radioactive Tracers?

Postby Renne » Sat Apr 15, 2017 3:18 am

Info from book---> Biology: Concepts and Connections, by Neil Campbell, Jane B. Reece, Lawrence G. Mitchell, and Martha R. Taylor

Benefits: used in medical diagnosis: for example kidney disorders and diagnosed by radioactive chemicals that are injected into the blood and measure the am out of radioactive material passed into the urine

Also used with a device called PET(position-emission tomography) in which the device monitors chemical process in the body. PET and radioactive tracers can locate cancer in tissue, diagnose heart disorder and perform basic research on the human brain.

Dangers: damages molecules, mainly DNA; energy released by radioactive isotopes release atoms that break up chemical bonds and create abnormal bonds

Example: nuclear explosion in Chernobyl, Ukraine released many isotopes that killed thirty people while the survivors had increased rates of thyroid cancer and increased birth defects--> the children from those mothers may get cancer

The main topic of the section in the book was about radioactive isotopes, not completely the same as radioactive tracers. The benefits part will help you, but the dangers part is mostly about the isotopes generally and are not directed specifically at the tracers. If you do use this info, it's best to say the info is contributed to by the main author, Neil Campbell.

Hope this helped for your flyer.

Pandaluv, Chernobyl killed more than 1 Million people.

Your answer stands as the "Best Answer" to date of my answer to your answer due to the fact that your answer to this question has thus far been the "only" answer.
