Asbestos... Chance Of Developing Diseases?

Postby Archy » Fri Sep 15, 2017 3:47 am

I lived with 10% asbestos tiles in my basement for my first 3-4 years of life.
They were mostly undisturbed, and I didn't go down there much.
But when I was about 3 I put a small cracked off piece of this asbestos tile in my mouth and then immediately spit it out.
I have to imagine that a lot of asbestos got in my system from that.
Am I at high risk to develop mesothelioma of something similar later in life?

Asbestos... Chance Of Developing Diseases?

Putting asbestoses in your mouth obviously isn't a good idea, but keep in mind that it's not poison in the usual sense of the word. The hazard comes from tiny fibers of it getting into your lungs. Even if you swallowed it, that probably wouldn't hurt you. Mesothelioma almost exclusively strikes people who used asbestos at work or who lived near asbestoses mines. Symptoms from exposure to building materials in the home is actually quite rares, so I don't think you have too much to worry about.
