Are Some Old Knife Switches Made With Asbestos?

Postby Rad » Tue Sep 12, 2017 2:57 am

I have a old Barkelew knife switch and I noticed that it doesn't have a slate base like most knife switches I've seen.
The base on this one is black and looks like some kind of pressed material I do see some kind of fibers in it.
I don't think its bakelite or it doesn't look like bakelite I've seen.
Its NOS but all the box says is Type B knife switch 60 amps No. 3152.
I don't see a date when it was made.
Could this thing be made out of asbestos?

Asbestos is grey.
Asbestos is a rock.
So will stay where you leave it.
Asbestos used to be used around coal furnaces as the asbestos tape could be used on the ducting.

-It has also been found in pearl-lite insulation because it occurred naturally in the ground with the pearl-lite..
Also on brake shoes as asbestos is softer than the steel caliper...or drum.

If you touch it, it won't kill you.
It is the fine thread bits that could be inhaled in., as the bits get stuck in the lung and that is where the cancer may start.
I say may because it does not affect everyone the same way.
You know, like that little old lady that smoked and drank until she died at 105 years old.

Its called Bakelite it is an early form of plastic.

Nope no switches I know of were made with asbestos and if there are asbestos fibers in the make up they are safe asbestos is only dangerous in dust form where it can get suspended in the air and then you breathe it, otherwise its perfectly safe and one of if not the best insulation man has ever made.

FYI: fiberglass in dust form is just as dangerous as asbestos and causes the same diseases and cancer!

What you describe sound like Bakelite. Asbestos is a light grayish color. (wood fibers that look like MDF) does sound like asbestos though. Seeing it's a 60 amp switch it could have some asbestos, the stuff was used in almost everything at one time. Just don't go sanding or drilling into the stuff. It's the dust that's dangerous.
