Addicted to sweets - just found out i'm pre diabetic. Help?

Postby gwynfor » Fri Apr 01, 2011 4:12 pm

I'm an overweight, 19 year old female with a family history of various health concerns including, but certainly not limited to, hyper tension, diabetes ( I and II), heart attack, and now cancer has struck in my immediate family (mother and sister both have thyroid and colon cancer).

I am a self diagnosed sugar addict - but all signs are pointing to my health taking to a turn for the worse if I continue my generally bad habits.

I quit smoking this year, and I've been collaborating with a doctor these past couple of weeks. We both agreed on a mainly liquid (and supervised) diet until I become a healthy weight.

Thing is, while I have a decent will on most occasions, I KNOW that if I completely strike out sweets, I'm not going to realistically make it to my goal health.

My question is, is there a way to indulge my sweet tooth while trying to compose a better lifestyle. The horror stories of refined sugar have haunted me for years, and I'm just looking for a way around them. I'm not looking for motivational approaches or a lecture. I just want to know what I can do to curb this sugar lust on my journey through good health?

Thanks in advance.

You losing weight can motivate you to not crave sweets. Remember , almost all of us have a sweet tooth. And I am not lecturing you , but I am concerned about a liquid diet . I have lost over 70 pounds just doing a low carb diet . For me this is thte best one. No carb counting. http://www.mendosa.com/gilists.htm

Plus Exercise. You cannot lose and keep weight off without exercise. I Nordic walk 1 1/2 hours a day everyday. Yes, it take Attitude and dedication. So, now you are a prediabetic , which really means you are diabetic. But can probably be controlled with diet and exercise.

There are 4 key steps to controlling glucose levels :

1) EXERCISE- Walking is fine but Nordic Walking is Great. Exercise also lowers Glucose levels , lowers Cholesterol and lowers Blood Pressure. Google it.Exercise is Non-Negotiable !!!Thats why it is Number 1 on the list.
2) Knowledge- http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/index.ph… This is a great site for info
diet- A low carb diet is in order. I can't count carbs so I use Mendosa's Glycemic Index Diet. Great for the whole family. http://www.mendosa.com/gilists.htm
3) Meds. Metformin to start. Never , ever take Actos or Avandia. They may kill you. Bone fractures, heart problems and what diabetics really don't need is that they change Bone Stem Cells to Fat Cells.
4) Diet- A low carb diet is in order. I can't count carbs so I use Mendosa's Glycemic Index Diet. Great for the whole family. http://www.mendosa.com/gilists.htm

Yes , metformin is great for a prediabetic.
You can say to yourself "I am going to start today , a Healthy Lifestyle ".Start today and before you know it you will have great glucose control and be Thin. WOW!!

You take care

You could try to limit your chances of getting sweets so you won't be tempted. If you are then tell yourself why you started the diet, what would happen if it fails, all the good things if you succeed, and that eating even a little or one would ruin the diet. After breaking the diet even once would only tempt you to do it again. Good Luck!

Coming from a 30+ year toker, I have pretty much tried using all the quit smoking items out there; and nothing at all has made it simple for me far more to stop the horrible addiction than this http://freepl.us/2/tVu6L1 It is absolutely great! I have never felt better in my whole life. Give it a shot, and you wont ever go back to traditional cigarettes. Good Luck!

Try this, from weight watchers:
1 large can crushed pineapple.
1 Angel food cake mix.

Mix together, pour in angel food cake pan & follow rest of cooking instructions on box.
Low calorie, low blood sugar, but fabulous taste!

my grandma is a diabetic and she has a very sweet tooth she resorts to eating sugar free candies which are not bad like you would think they would be... and use splenda as a sweetener it works just as good as sugar

A very short article by a doctor that says aspartame makes you gain weight. She says that it is metabolized in the liver and uses so much liver energy that that liver has to just store any fat.

"After having been consulted by thousands of overweight people suffering with problems concerning the liver and/or metabolism I can assure you that aspartame will not help you in any way, indeed it will help you to gain unwanted weight."

Learn to like stevia. Biggest Loser Medical Adviser, Dr Michael Dansinger has an article on the advantages of adding stevia to your diet.

(for the recipe above, i would leave out the maca powder)
Frozen purple grapes is also good (kind of like hard candy)

these are recipes from the raw food diet. they have recipe book out (for meals, snacks, shakes, smoothies, dessert, etc...) and the good thing is it's 100% healthy!! :) remember to always count your calories.
